WINNING HIS OWN CUP.—On Friday afternoon the monthly competition between the members of the 12th Hants Rifle Corps took place at Helmington-bottom, for the silver cup presented by Captain Seward to the winner of the three highest consecutive scores. The order of competing was as follows, viz.:—First month at 200 yards, seven rounds. Second month at 500 yards, seven rounds. Third month at 600 yards, seven rounds. Fourth month at 200 yards, seven rounds. Fifth month at 500 yards, seven rounds. Sixth month at 600 yards, seven rounds. And the following were the rules:— Sergeant Caplin to give three points, Captain Seward two, Sergeant Cole two. Corporal Rapley two, and Private Dear two. Corporal Carter, Corporal Penn, Private H. Caplin, Private Rapley, and Sergeant-Instructor Allen were to give one point to the remainder of the corps. The firing was arranged to take place monthly, commencing in March, when Sergeant Cole was the winner, and who also was the winner in April. Sergeant Caplin obtained the highest score in May, and in June, July, and August, Captain Seward scored the three highest consecutive numbers, thereby winning his own cup.
