PETERSFIELD.
COUNTY BENCH.—TUESDAY.—Before the Hon. J. J. Carnegie (chairman), J. Bonham-Carter, Esq., M.P., W. Nicholson, Esq., M.P., J. Waddington, Esq., and Capt. Sandeman.
Daniel Lee, of Petersfield, was summoned for non-payment of a poor rate made on the 1st October, amounting to £1 3s. 5d.—defendant did not appear, and the case being proved a distress warrant for the rate and costs was ordered to be issued; execution to be suspended for a week.
STEALING HOLLY.—Richard Winchester, of Frensham, charged with cutting and stealing a number of holly sticks in Kingswood, in the parish of Bramshott, on the 14th December, was fined 21s., including costs and damage or 14 days’ imprisonment with hard labour.
STEALING A HAMMER.—Thomas Gregory was charged with stealing a hammer, value 1s., the property of John Hatch.—Prosecutor deposed: I live at Catherington, and am a small farmer. On Wednesday, the 15th of this month, I was at work in one of my fields taking a broken wheel off a cart. I had several tools with me. When I had finished my work, I took up as many of the tools as I could carry in my hand and went home, leaving the hammer on the ground. I went back about five o'clock and found it was gone. Defendant was at work draining in the next field. On the 17th I went with P.C. Grant to defendant's house. Defendant was there, and he gave me a hammer; that now produced is the same, and is the one I had lost.—Elizabeth Hatch, the daughter of the prosecutor, deposed: On Wednesday, 15th January, I was looking out of the window a little before 12 o'clock, and saw defendant passing along the bottom of the garden, and go to the place where my father had been at work; he looked around and then stooped down and picked up something. I could not see what it was; he put it into his pocket and I saw part of the handle sticking out. He then went towards his home.—P.C. Grant deposed: On the 17th January, I went with prosecutor to defendant's house. I told him I was come to take him into custody on a charge of stealing a hammer belonging to John Hatch. He said he had not stolen a hammer. Prosecutor said, "It's no use your denying it, as my girl saw you through the window." Defendant then said, "Well I did pick up a hammer, but I did not intend to steal it; you'd have had your hammer back, as I meant to bring it to you. I've often picked up hammers and spanners in the course of my work." Defendant then gave me the hammer which I now produce.—The defendant was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment with hard labour.
