CELEBRITIES AT PETERSFIELD
———
MUSIC FESTIVAL
Dr. Adrian Boult, D.Mus., Ll.D., the famous B.B.C. conductor, and Sir Walford Davies, the Master of the King’s Musick, are two of the noted figures that will feature in Petersfield’s coming Musical Festival. To-day (Friday) the first public rehearsal will be held.
Other familiar names that appear on this year’s programme are: Stuart Robertson, William Parsons, Dorothy Silk, Mary Jarred, Eric Green. May Bartlett, Howard Hemming, Kathleen Willson, Frederick Sharp, Jelly D'Aranyi, and Irene Scharrer. Dr. Armstrong Gibbs and Dr. Staton are the two judges for the competitions for the adult choirs. Mr. Arnold Goldsbrough is the accompanist.
This is the 31st Festival, and the story of the rise of this annual event from a small competition for a few district choirs to the popular musical celebration it has become, with its widespread appeal, is one of which Petersfield is justly proud.
On Tuesday, April 7. the combined choirs of some 400 voices, with orchestra, will present Bach’s ‟St. Matthew’s Passion,” an ambitious undertaking. Sir Walford Davies is to give a lecture on the Passion on April 6.
On April 15 the competitions will begin, and at the concert there will be some 350 voices singing. On April 16, the last day of the Festival, the children come into their own with a special concert. The Festival will be the first to be held in the new Town Hall.
