PETERSFIELD, OCTOBER 17.
A MATRIMONIAL MISADVENTURE.—One of those rarely occurring scenes of disappointment at the altar happened in Liss Church, on the morning of Tuesday, which, upon becoming known (being fair day) occasioned considerable amusement. It appears that a fly and pair of horses started from the Dolphin Hotel on the morning of the before mentioned day and took up at the house of her father (a grocer and dealer), at Rake, in the parish of Liss, the intended happy bride with her fair attendants, and proceeded onwards to the parish church, about two miles away, where she was joined by her wooing swain, a young member of the Hants Constabulary. Up to this time all passed off as ‟merry as a marriage bell,” and looked bright and cheering, for the happy consummation of tieing the nuptial knot — everything being arranged — the parson and clerk in readiness. And lo! the anxious moment at length arrived ‟to be or not to be,” when his reverence demanded the license. Judge ye, who can! of the great and sudden change which came over the countenances of all present when it was found that the party had relied upon obtaining the license from the clergyman at the church. Finding that it could not then and there be granted, and that the marriage could not be effected, the scene became confused — the lady fainted — handkerchiefs were brought into play, a la fan style, and the clerk was dispatched in hot haste to some cottages for water, which being obtained, a recovery ensued, and the party shortly after proceeded on their way to Petersfield. Upon arriving they at once proceeded to a solicitor, and, in the next place, to the resident clergyman, but being unsuccessful in obtaining the license on that day they quietly sat down to dinner, and after partaking of the same they hied off to the fair, where having inspected the wonders exhibited, soon after left by train to console themselves in the best way they could for the want of the marriage certificate, unfortunately not in possession, from the want of foresight in not obtaining the license beforehand.
