PETERSFIELD
COURT LEET — THE ANNUAL ELECTION MAYOR.
On Monday last the annual Court Leet was holden for the purpose of electing the Mayor and the several officers for the ensuing year. The jury, &c., assembled at the Red Lion Hotel, in accordance with ancient custom, at half-past one o'clock, and proceeded, headed by the mace-bearer, the Recorder, —— Williams, Esq., and the Town Clerk (E. Blackmore, Esq.) to the Town Hall. The jury having been sworn, and the other preliminary business gone through, Samuel W. Seward, Esq., was proposed, and re-elected to serve the office of Mayor, and the following officers chosen, viz:—Wm. Carter, crier and bailiff; John Bailey, constable for the lower half hundred of Finchdean; Walter Payne and George Smart, tythingmen; Thomas Barnes and Charles Hoar, leather sellers; and Elijah Wakeford, beadle , and Hayward . The business being concluded the Mayor, Recorder, Town Clerk, with the Jury and Officers returned to the Hotel, where an excellent dinner was prepared by Mr. Crafts, in his usual style, of which it is needless to say more than that it was thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated, and a happy meeting concluded the proceedings of the day.
