‟THE FIRST TIME OF ASKING”—At the parish church on Sunday last, a scene of rare occurrence took place upon the publication of the Banns of Marriage between Thomas Banks, (a master bricklayer and widower), and Ann Simms (a cook in service), by the Rev. J. M. Sumner. From both parties named being present in church at the time, a doubt consequently arose, and induced the necessary query of ‟to be, or not to be, that is the question,” to be put, which, being satisfactorily answered in the affirmative, the ceremony was proceeded with, not however, without creating those feelings, better understood than described, throughout the congregation under the circumstances as stated above, at ‟The first time of Asking.”
