PETERSFIELD.

THE CATTLE PLAGUE.—CLOSING THE MARKET.—In Accordance with the decision of the magistrates at the late Quarter Sessions, held at Winchester, bills were issued on Monday, the 15th instant, by the chief constable of Hampshire, Captain J. H. Forrest, notifying that, ‟From this date until the 1st of March it will not be lawful to bring or send any cow, heifer, bull, bullock, ox, or calf, into any market or fair, or to any other place within the jurisdiction of the Court of Quarter Sessions for exhibition or sale.” Consequently our market, on Wednesday last, cut but a sorry figure, from the non-exhibition as heretofore of the above-named stock, and the attendant bustle and life in connection therewith. It is, however, highly gratifying to state that up to the present time no case is known to have occurred within this district, for which Mr. S. Evershead, of Godalming, is appointed inspector.
