PETERSFIELD
The borough of Petersfield consists of the town of Petersfield, together with several adjoining parishes or portions of parishes, all agricultural. Its Parliamentary area is described as follows in the Act 2 and 3 Wm. 4, c. 64, Schedule O:—"The old borough of Petersfield, and the tithing of Sheet; the several parishes of Buriton, Liss and Froxfield; the several tithings of Ramsdean, Langrish, and Oxenbourne, in the parish of East Meon; and also the parish of Steep, except the respective tithings of North and South Ambersham."
The population in 1861 was 5,655; showing an increase of 1,264 since 1831. The number of inhabited houses in 1861 was, 1,135. The number of electors on the register of 1865-66 was —£10 occupiers, 323; double entries, 27,—actual number 296.
The total number of male occupiers in 1866 was 1,040, of whom 690 were at a rental below £10.
There is no municipal government within the borough, which comprises an area of 24,530 acres.
Building has increased within the borough since 1832, but the nearest part of the boundary is more than a mile from the limits of the town.
The Commissioners do not recommend any extension of the existing boundaries of the borough.
