THE MATCH OF CRICKET—between eleven gentlemen of Winchester and eleven of Petersfield, came off on Monday, the 1st instant, on the Petersfield Recreation Ground, near the town. The day being exceedingly fine caused a large number of persons to be present to witness this contest. At the close of the match the game stood as follows:—

Petersfield, first innings, 139, second innings, 44.

Winchester first innings, 103, second innings, 45, the Winchester gentlemen having 7 wickets to go down.

Subsequently the whole of the players left the ground in their respective carriages for Adhurst Saint Marys, the seat of J. B. Carter, Esq., M.P., to partake of a sumptuous dinner, provided in a large tent specially erected for the occasion, adjoining the mansion, where all spent a most happy and jovial evening.

West Sussex Gazette — Thursday 4 August 1864

CRICKET.—A capital match was played on our Heath on Monday last, between the Petersfield Club and the South-Western Club of Winchester. Petersfield went in first, and scored 139. Winchester made 103, and as the match was not played out this of course decided the game in favor of the former. In the second innings Petersfield obtained 44, one of their best men, J. Etherington, having been obliged to leave the field from illness. Winchester commenced their second innings for 80, of which they scored 47 with the loss of two wickets. The weather was everything that could be desired, and there was an unusually large attendance of spectators. After the stumps were drawn the parties repaired to Adhurst St Mary’s, the mansion of J. Bonham Carter, Esq., M.P., who is President of the Petersfield Club, where they partook of a sumptuous dinner and spent a most agreeable evening.

Apropos of the large attendance of spectators, we noticed among these a great many ladies, some in carriages and others on foot, and we could not help remarking that it would be a vast improvement to our already excellent recreation ground if a number pf seats were provided, more especially in the vicinity of the cricket ground. If this important desideratum were supplied it would doubtless be an additional inducement to the ladies of the town and neighbourhood to grace the scene with their presence, and would also be an appropriate mode of testifying to the Cricket Club that their exertions are appreciated by the public.
