CHIDDINGFOLD v. PETERSFIELD.

     The first match between these clubs came off on the Heath, on Friday week, favored by cricketing weather. The wickets were pitched at 10 o’clock, and the toss being won by Chiddingfold, A. Simmonds and G. Barrett first took the willow to the bowling of Etherington and Stephens. Some excellent play was exhibited, and we must not omit noticing the hitting of Whicher and Carter, on the part of Petersfield, in the second innings, each obtaining runs in the clear open, which occasioned considerable excitement, not only to the players, but to a respectable assemblage of lookers on. The hit of the former was particularly admired, being a square hit, raising the ball beautifully over the booth and a hillock being called ‟the Cricketing Hill,” far enough to require three throwers to send it back into the play, scoring one 7, one 3, one 2, and 6 singles, total 18, and not out. The hit of the latter being a similar hit (with the exception of not going over the booth), and scoring one 7, four 3’s, two 2’s, and 6 Single, total 29 runs, and run out. Upon the stumps being drawn, Petersfield had 53 runs to get to tie, and four wickets to go down. The following is the score:—
