PETERSFlELD.]—ENTERTAINMENT. — On the evenings of the 13th and 14th inst. the pupils of Churcher’s College, at Petersfield, gave a dramatic entertainment, assisted by Mr. Martin, their usher, in the school-room at the College, the walls of which were beautifully ornamented with the portrait of Shakespeare, and a great many pretty devices; the scenes were well painted, and the performances of the boys were very good indeed, especially that of masters William Fay and Holdaway, who afterwards gave some songs in character. A great many of the clergy, gentry, and tradesmen, with their families, attended by the kind invitation of Mr. A. Dusautoy and Mrs. Dusautoy, the master and mistress of the College, who are always doing their best to promote the comfort and happiness of those placed under their charge. Great praise and thanks are due to Mr. Martin for the excellent manner the whole of the performances were conducted. Amongst the visitors were the Rev. J. M. Sumner, the rector, the Rev. Mr. Haigh, the Rev. Mr. Coles, and about 50 other persons. The first piece consisted ‟A Rough Diamond,” a comic drama, by T. B. Buckstone, the characters being filled as follows :—Lord Plato, Master Williams; Sir William Evergreen, Master Carter; Capt. Augustus Blenhem, Master Knight; Cousin Joe, Master Holdaway; Lady Plato, Master Blackmore: Margery, Master Fay. The second piece was ‟Next of Kin,” a comic drama, by L. Falconer, Esq. :—Mr. Mountjoy, Master Carter; Mr. Grubton, a lawyer, Master Holdaway; Mr. Facile, a lawyer, Master Knight; Tim Chump, alias Theodore Villiers, Master Fay; Sam, a footman, Master Williams; Buttons, a page, Master Gosden; Hafiz, a Hindoo, Master Wright; Miss Clara Mountjoy, Master Blackmore; and Mrs Chump, Master C. Knight There was a variety of songs, and a dance by masters Blackmore and T. Carter.
