THE PROPOSED CORN EXCHANGE.—A numerous and influential meeting of the shareholders and subscribers of this company was held at the Town Hall on Wednesday last, Mr. Shenton in the chair. The secretary (Mr. Soames) announced that 278 shares had been already applied for, which, with the subscriptions, represented about 1000l. It was unanimously resolved that the site of the Corn Exchange should be the corner of the Market-square entering the High-street. It was also resolved that the capital of the company should be 3000l., and that 2l. per share be paid on allotment. The following gentlemen were appointed directors:—Messrs. Shenton, S. W. Seward, G. H. Seward, Elkington, H. Boys, Small, and Crafts. Thanks were voted to the chairman and the meeting separated. The greatest unanimity pervaded the meeting and the ‟Petersfield Corn Exchange Company (Limited)” may now be considered as fairly afloat, with every prospect of being a paying concern.

THE INTENDED NEW CORN EXCHANGE

On Wednesday afternoon last (Markey day) at four o’clock, the adjourned and final meeting was held in the Town Hall, which was attended by some of our principal gentry, among whom were the Right Hon. Sir W. G. H. Jolliffe, Bart., M.P., and our leading farmers and tradesmen of the town and neighbourhood. The minutes of the last meeting having been read, the site of the premises, belonging to Sir W. Jolliffe, lately in the occupation of Mrs. Hoar, leading from the Market-square down the High-street, was selected as the most eligible for the erection of the proposed building, and it was resolved that a company should be at once formed, with a view to purchasing the proposed site. Nearly two-thirds of the shares have already been subscribed for.
