THE FIRST ENGINE DOWN THE LINE..—On Friday last the first engine came down the line from Petersfield to Midhurst, with the government inspectors, also Messrs. Dierden and Buxton and some other gentlemen; the journey down was done in fourteen minutes, the inspection of the line, bridges, &c., being made on their return. This certainly looks like business, and we should think now the opening of the line for traffic would soon be announced. There were a good many people on the look out for the engine, but not so many as there would have been, had it been more generally known, especially as this is the first steam engine for locomotion that has ever got so far as Midhurst.
