PETERSFIELD.
THE LATE MALT STEALING CASE.—Our readers will remember that some weeks ago, three young men of this town were apprehended on a charge of stealing a large quantity of malt, belonging to Mr. Crafts, of the Red Lion Brewery, of which charge they were subsequently convicted at the Quarter Sessions and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment. The principal witness in the case was a young man named George Standen, who lives near the malt house, and who, happening to look from his bedroom window in the middle of the night, saw the robbery going on, and immediately gave information to the police, and rendered effectual assistance in the capture of the thieves. The inhabitants of the town and neighbourhood have shown their appreciation of his prompt and praiseworthy conduct on the occasion, by raising a subscription amounting to £10, which has this week been handed to him. We may add, as evidence of the general estimation in which Standen’s conduct in the mater is held, that there were about 70 contributors to the fund.
