HANTS QUARTER SESSIONS.

FINANCIAL REPORT

Mr. MELVILLE PORTAL read the report of the Finance Committee, from which it appeared that during the quarter the receipts had been 6,895l. 17s. 4d., and the expenditure 6.147l. 8s. 2d., leaving a balance in the Treasurer’s hands of 748l. 9s. 2d. The committee recommended a ¾d. rate for the general purposes of the county; and a ¾d. rate for the purposes of the constabulary.
Mr. MELVILLE PORTAL congratulated the Court that, though the present proposed rate was ¾d. in the pound both on the county and constabulary account, the whole rating for the year was only 2d. on the county and 2¼d. on the constabulary.
The Rev. J. T. MAINE said it was satisfactory also to know that from 1829 to 1839 the rating for the county was 4 9-16d., descending to 4 2-10d. and 3 10-16d. and that their present good financial position was mainly owing to the great care of Mr. Portal.
The report was adopted.
