PETERSFIELD.

Agent—MR. G. DUPLOCK.

An inquest was held on Thursday last, at the Queen’s Head, at Sheet, before E. Hoskins, Esq., the coroner, touching the death of Thomas Collyer, who fell dead in the road between Ramshill and Sheet, on Tuesday last, as he was on his way home from Petersfield. Deceased had lived for many years in a cottage by the roadside, near Bowyer’s turnpike gate; he had been to Petersfield on Tuesday, where he had called on his son in the High-street, and also on his daughter, at the top of Ramshill, he appeared to be quite well in health and even more than usually cheerful, but in less than an hour after leaving his daughter’s house he was a corpse. The following evidence was given: Thomas Garrett, deposed—I am a shopkeeper, and live at Selborne; on Tuesday last, in the afternoon I was riding up the road leading from Sheet towards Petersfield, when I saw the deceased lying in the road, he was lying on his stomach, and his face was in his hat, a basket was lying near him. I called to him, and as he did not answer I got out of my cart and went to him; he did not move, and I at once came to the conclusion that he was dead. I then got into my cart and drove off as fast as I could for assistance, I soon met two men and turned back with them; I got to deceased first, and found a young man with him who had turned him over, he was quite dead; there were no marks of violence on his face. I then drove into Petersfield for a doctor.—Albert Warren Leachman deposed: I am a doctor of medicine, and reside at Petersfield. I knew the deceased, I believe he was 75 years of age. I have known him since the end of' June last, I then attended him about a fort-night, and he has been to me for medicine occasionally since. I last saw him alive on Wednesday, the 29th of August, he was suffering from disease of the heart, and general dropsy arising from it. I should think the disease was of long standing, and it was no surprise to me to hear he had died suddenly—he had a weak heart, which more frequently causes sudden death than other forms of diseased heart. I have seen the body to-day, there is nothing unnatural in its appearance, and I believe he died from natural causes. The jury unanimously returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence.
