PETERSFIELD.

SANITARY IMPROVEMENTS. — To the Editor of the West Sussex Gazette. Dear Sir, —I gladly avail myself of your wide-spread journal to tell a piece of good news, not only to the inhabitants, but to our friends at a distance, who so justly admire the beauties of the neighbourhood, and are glad to pay us a visit for the sake of breathing the pure and fresh air for which Petersfield is so famous. The newly-appointed Highway Board is bestirring itself to good purpose. An underground drain is being laid in Horn-lane, so as entirely to do away with the filthy gutter which has hitherto been so offensive to the eyes and nostrils of the inhabitants, and the whole space will be available as a carriage way, thus making a nice approach to the town on that side. Having commenced with what seems an almost Herculean task, we may fairly hope the Board will carry out yet further improvements and that we shall soon see the drains in the streets carried underground, as in their present state they have long been a serious drawback to the desirableness of the town as a residence, but hitherto it has been nobody’s business to remedy the evil. While on the subject of improvements, I would venture to suggest that the Gas Company would improve their own dividends, and increase the comfort of their customers if they gave us purer gas and more of it. — I remain, yours obediently, AN OLD INHABITANT. —Petersfield, Sept. 8th, 1863.
