PETERSFIELD.
Agent—MR. G. DUPLOCK

     MAGISTRATES’ CLERK’S OFFICE.(Thursday.)—Before Hon. J. J. Carnegie.

—   William John Langford was brought up in custody, under remand, charged with robbing his employer, Mr. Crassweller, grocer, of this town.—P.C. Henry Elderfield deposed as follows:—On Tuesday the 16th, I was engaged in watching the press of Mr. Crassweller. About eight o’clock in the morning, I saw prisoner, in company with George Waller, come out of the yard gates and go across the square towards the police-station. I went towards them but before I met them they turned into the ‟Bell” public-house. As they went in at one door I entered at the other and met them in the passage. I asked them to go into the parlour, as I must search them to see what they had about them. Prisoner went in first and walked straight to the opposite side of the room, and I took from his pocket the pound of candles which I now produce, and attempted to conceal them under some linen that was lying on the seat. I asked him what he had there, he turned round and said, ‟all right,” and handed me the candles. I then charged him with stealing them, and locked him up, when I charged him he said, ‟Oh yes, all right.” I afterwards went to prisoner’s house and found the articles which I now produce. Witness here produced the following articles: 5½ lb. of bacon, 5¼ lb. cheese, 4½ lb. moist sugar, being a mixture of several sorts, 1 lb. peppermint, in two canisters, ½ lb. fresh butter, 1¼ lb. lard, 5 oz. ginger, ½ lb. currants, ½ lb. raisins, 6 oz. coffee, in canister, 1 lb. sperm candles, 1 lb. wax candles, I ball of twine, not opened, 1 shoe brush and 1 oil brush, new. I found all the goods in two different cupboards in a back room, except the twine, which was in a chest of drawers, and the coffee, which was in a cupboard in the front room.—Edward Graves deposed, I am an assistant to Mr. Crassweller, and have been so for nearly three years. We have candles exactly similar to those now produced, and tied with a similar red string, I can distinctly identify the back produced as belonging to Mr. Crassweller, it had been gnawed by a cat, and had been lying about the store for some time, I know the butter by the print as being of the same dairy as we have on sale, the sperm candles are exactly like those we sell, and are in a similar box, they were just like the one now produced. I can swear to the shoe brush from a private mark, and also to the oil brush from the price mark.—Prisoner declined asking either of the witnesses any questions, and on receiving the usual caution merely replied ‟I have nothing to say.” Committed for trial at the ensuing quarter sessions, and the witnesses were bound over to appear and give evidence at the trial.
