PETERSFIELD.
COUNTY BENCH.—Tuesday.— Before the Hon. J. J. Carnegie, (chairman), Sir J. C. Jervoise, Bart., M.P., J. Waddington, Esq., and Major Briggs.
Some licenses which had stood over from the last meeting were renewed.
— Application for a Spirit License. —William White, keeper of a beerhouse at Colemore, whose application for a spirit license at the last meeting was adjourned to this day for the production of witnesses in furtherance of he same, and none such appearing, the license was refused.
— Stealing a Pair of Trousers.—George Griffin, musician, was charged by Joseph Hobbs with stealing a pair blue cloth trousers, his property.—Prosecutor deposed that on the night of the 7th inst. he slept at the Crown, publichouse, Petersfield, in the same bedroom as the prisoner, but in a separate bed, and on the following morning he left prisoner in bed at six o’clock. The trousers were then in the room. Upon prosecutor going to his bedroom at ten o’clock at night, he found that his trousers, which he had left at the head of his bed, were gone. He gave information to the police.—P.C. Elderfield produced the trousers received from a travelling man at Midhurst. —Henry Rawlins, a travelling grinder, residing at Brighton (when at home), deposed to meeting prisoner at the Red Lion, publichouse, at Midhurst, on Thursday last, when he offered the trousers for 2s. 6d. and a pint of ale. He bought them for 2s. 6d.—P.C. Elderfield apprehended the prisoner on the Petworth road, on Friday.—Prisoner pleaded guilty, was sentenced to one calendar month’s hard labour.
— Assault.—George Winter, of the Half Moon, Sheet, charged by Eliza Bailey, wife of Mr. Bailey, of the Queen’s Head, with assaulting her on the 23rd of August, was fined 2s. 6d. and costs.
