— ASSAULT. — Joseph Pannell was charged with assaulting Robert Porter, at Buriton, on Friday, the 11th inst. Defendant is head Carter to Mr. Shenton, at Manor Farm, and complainant works under him. It appeared from the evidence that on the above day defendant struck complainant three times in the stable for having refused to allow his (defendant’s) little boy to ride home from school in the waggon as he was accustomed to do. Defendant stated that for some time past Porter had been in the habit of ill-treating his children, by spitting in their faces, and had grossly insulted his wife. On the occasion in question, when he complained of his having refused to let his children ride home as usual, he became abusive, which so provoked him that he struck him on the side of the head with his open hand. Mr. Shenton stated that defendant was a very respectable and well-conducted man, and the bench, considering that he had acted under great provocation, inflicted a nominal fine of sixpence, with costs.
— POACHING. —Thomas Clarke of Priorsdeane was charged by James Hawkins with setting a wire for the purpose of taking game, on Friday, the 11th inst., in the parish of Priorsdeane. Two previous convictions having been recorded against him, defendant was ordered to pay a fine of £1, with costs, 7s. 6d., or one month’s imprisonment with hard labour.
