PETTY SESSIONS.—Tuesday.—Present Sir W. W. Knighton, Bart. (chairman) J. Waddington, Esq., and Major Briggs.
— James Kelly was brought up in custody, charged with stealing, at Liphook, on the 31st March, one half-crown, the property of Charles Huntingford. It appeared from the evidence of complainant that prisoner, who is a travelling razor grinder, applied to him for a job, when he gave him some razors and scissors to grind and an umbrella to repair, for which he charged 1s. 6d. Complainant had three half-crowns, two shillings, and a sovereign lying on the chimney-piece, the former being wrapped in a paper. He took the silver to pay prisoner for the job, and as it was getting dusk he turned to the window to make sure he had not taken the sovereign by mistake. When he so turned to the window he left the open paper containing the three half-crowns on the table. Finding he had not a sixpence he asked the prisoner to go and get one of the shillings changed, and as soon as he was gone out for this purpose complainant missed one of the half-crowns; no one else was in the room. Other evidence was given to prove that prisoner had no money in the afternoon, and that in the evening he changed a half crown at the ‟Anchor,” where he had three glasses of rum. Convicted—21 days' imprisonment, with hard labour.
— John Lillywhite was brought up in custody, charged with stealing, in October last, a prong, belonging to Mr. James Goldsmith, at Horndean. The prong, which had been missing ever since October, was found by P.C. Henry Grant on Monday, the 4th instant, in the possession of prisoner, who was using it in his garden, and who at first said he had it a long time ago from his old master, but, on the policeman remarking that it was very much like one which he had been looking after belonging to Mr. Goldsmith, prisoner said it was Mr. Goldsmith’s, and that he had borrowed it, and had not taken it back. Convicted—three weeks’ imprisonment, with hard labour.
— Mary Welch, wife of Peter Welch, of Sheet, charged William Dear, also of Sheet, with an assault. Complainant deposed that defendant came to her house in the absence of her husband and made improper proposals to her, which she repulsed, and pushed him out of the house, when he struck her on the head with his fist and attempted to force open the door. Defendant said he was tipsy at the time, and did not remember anything about going to the house. The bench told him that a plea of drunkenness was no justification whatever for such conduct, and adjudged him to pay a fine of 1l. and costs 7s. 6d., or three weeks imprisonment, wit hard labour. The money was paid.
— The license of the ‟White Hart,” Petersfield, was transferred from John Adams to John Harding.
— Application was made to transfer the license of the ‟Ship and Bell,” at Horndean, but the parties had omitted to serve the necessary notices, and consequently the matter had to stand over till the nest transfer day in June.
— The following poor's rates were signed:—Petersfield, 1s. 8d. in pound; Liss, 1s. 8d.; Buriton, 1s. 4d.; Greatham, 1s. 8d.; Sheet, 1s. 8d.; Hawkley, 2s. 4d,; Empshott, 2s. 4d.
— An application from the overseers of the parish of Buriton an order was signed for the removal of a pauper named John Robinson with his wife and four children, who have been chargeable on the said parish from the 10th of March last, to the parish of Easton, near Winchester. In consequence of the illness of the pauper the execution of the order is suspended until he shall be in a fit state to be removed.
