PETERSFIELD.
PETTY SESSIONS, Tuesday.—Present:—The Hon. J. J. Carnegie (chairman), Sir W. W. Knighton, Bart., Sir A. K. Macdonald, Bart., J. Bonham Carter, Esq., M.P., and Major Briggs.
ASSAULT CASE FROM LISS — James Upfield v. John Longhurst, John Longhurst v. James Upfield.—These were cross-summonses, each party charging the other with an assault. Both pleaded not guilty, and the Magistrates decided to take the cases together. The parties live at Liss, and it appeared from the evidence that a good deal of ill-feeling had existed between them for some time past, and on Wednesday evening, July 31st, they met in the public road near the Bell public house, which is kept by Longhurst, when some quarrelling took place, which resulted in the alleged assaults. The Magistrates fined each party £2, with costs, which, in Upfield’s case amounted to 18s., and in Longhurst’s to £1 2s.
A VIOLENT ASSAULT. — Charles Andrew was convicted of a violent assault on Martha Sherwood, at Privett, on Tuesday, July 23rd.—Fined £2, and costs 16s.
THREATENING A WIFE. — William White, of Bramshott, was charged with threatening and ill-treating his wife, Mary White, and was required to enter his own recognizance of £20 and to find two sureties of £10 each to keep the peace for 12 months. He said he could not find any sureties (this was his third appearance on a similar charge), and he was in default committed for six months’ imprisonment with hard labour.
STORE STOCK LICENSES. — George Langrish was fined 1s., and costs 11s., for taking three calves into Petersfield market with a ‟Fat Stock License” instead of the ‟Store Stock License” required by the order in Council.
A STRAY HORSE. — James Parker was fined 2s. 6d., and costs 5s. 6d., for allowing his horse to stray on the highway on the 2nd inst. in the parish of Sheet.
STEALING A DUCK. — Robert Clifton and Harry Clifton, two lads, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a duck, the property of Andrew Bridger, at Liss, on Saturday, the 10th inst. — Three weeks’ imprisonment with hard labour.
