     PETTY SESSIONS. — Tuesday. — Present: Sir W. W. Knighton, Bart. (chairman), J. Waddington, Esq., and Major Briggs.

—   The only business before the bench consisted of appeals against sundry poors'-rates as lately fixed by the Assessment Committee. Mr. Field (Gosport) appeared for several of the appellants; others were represented by Mr. Adams (Petersfield). The whole of the cases were undefended, and several of them presented this singular anomaly—that the Overseers (who are legally the respondents) were called as witnesses on behalf of the appellants. The following reductions were made:—

  • Mr. Richard Hall (Steep), from 6l.13s. to 4l. 5s.;
  • Mr. William Thorp (Froxfield), from 18l. 18s. to 13l. 12s.;
  • Mr. Payne (Bordean), from 19l. 19s. to 11l. 8s. 6d.;
  • Mr. Bridgman (Bordean), from 108l. to 87l.;

  • Mr. Dean (Buriton), from 27s. per acre to 19s. 6d.;

  • Mr. Aldred (Steep), from 12l. to 10l. 10s.;
