PETERSFIELD.

PETTY SESSIONAL BUSINESS.—Present: Honorable J. J. CARNEGIE (chairman), Sir J. C. JERVOISE, Bart., M.P., J. BONHAM CARTER, Esq., M.P., and J. WADDINGTON, Esq.

A COOK STEALING AND SELLING HER MASTER’S BUTTER—JANE TALBOT, on remand, pleaded guilty to stealing and selling two pounds of butter, of the value of 2s. 6d., the property of Mr. Cross, surgeon, of this town.
Mr. R. Cross deposed that he was on a visit at Mrs. Coombs’ on the 24th ult., and noticed half a pound of butter very similar to his own, having the same print and colour. He mad an observation to Mrs. Coomb that it was his, but she did not appear to be aware of it. He took possession of the butter, and gave his servant in charge. His object in bringing the case before them was not to press severely upon the prisoner, but more by way of caution to others, and drew their attention to her having already been confined for a fortnight.
The hon. chairman told prisoner that, upon her own confession, she had been guilty of robbing her master, but for whose kind consideration in her favour the sentence would have been heavier.—Sentenced to 14 days’ hard labour.

ALLEGED STEALING A SHILLING.—ROSE ANN MURRAY was charged with picking the pocket of James Booker, a labourer, of Selbourne, between the hours of 11 and 12 in the day.—Prisoner, who was apprehended by P.C. Cave, pleaded guilty, and was dismissed with a caution, after being four days in the lock up.

ALLEGED STEALING OF WOOD.—HARRIETT BARNETT, an elderly woman, and ANN ETHERINGTON, with a young child in her arms, were charged with stealing four pieces of beechwood, cleft for charcoal, of the value of 4d. from a hanger in the parish of Priorsdean. The charge was proved, and prisoners were both sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment, and hard labour; but it appeared that the prisoner Ann Etherington had only been confined a fortnight on the preceding Saturday, and the case was remitted, with the conviction to stand against her.

IN SEARCH OF RABBITS.—HENRY HOLDEN and DANIEL PIERSON, labourers, were charged with being in search of rabbits, on the 23rd of October, with ferret and nets, in Tankerdale-lane, the property of J. Bonham Carter Esq. The charge was proved, and defendants were adjudged to pay 5s. fine each, with 11s. costs.
