VOLUNTEER BALL.—This annual event came off on Thursday night, at the Dolphin Hotel. The assembly room was most tastefully decorated by Mr. Gammon. At the ends of the room were elegant devices in pink and white, with brilliant stars, and on the side walls were the Crown and V.R. , and the Prince of Wales’s plume and A.E. At the upper end of the room the device was surrounded by a scroll, bearing the volunteers’ motto, ‟Defence, not Defiance,” on a raised kind of terrace. By a judicious arrangement of bayonets and wax lights, an excellent effect was produced. A large mirror was placed at each end of the room, surrounded by evergreens and flowers. The orchestra was adorned in a similar manner, with crossed swords in front, and the whole of the passages as well as the ball-room were decorated with a profusion of evergreens and most beautiful paper flowers, very skilfully made by Mrs. Crafts, while a perfect flood of light was thrown on the gay scene from several brilliant gaseliers and a number of coloured lamps and wax lights. We have so often had to remark on the excellence of all the arrangements made on similar occasions by Mr. and Mrs. Crafts, that a repetition of commendation would be superfluous, and we will therefore content us with saying that the careful manner in which all was done, and the real elegance and comfort which pervaded every corner of the suite of apartments, only served to bear out all we have previously said of them. Dancing commenced about ten o’clock to the strains of Mr. J. Conduit’s excellent band. The following list of those present is as correct as we can make it, but as the names were omitted on many of the tickets, it is necessarily somewhat incomplete:—Lieut.-Col.—Nicholson.
