SHOPLIFTING 

     John Turner, a low-looking fellow, was charged with stealing a pair of boots, value 10s,, from the shop of Mr. George Prince, bootmaker, of Queen-street. It appeared that prosecutor, on being informed by his wife, ran after the prisoner and took the boots from him, and P.C. Voller coming up at the time he was taken into custody. On the way to the police-station he said ‟If I hadn’t been taken for this job, I would for some other.” Prisoner, who said he had come to Portsmouth by way Petersfield, was sentenced to 21 days’ imprisonment with hard labour.
