PETERSFIELD, SEPTEMBER 26.

     MAGISTRATES’ CLERK’S OFFICE.—Before Mr. J. Waddington.

—   A Navvy Leaving his Work.—William Preston, a navvy, in the employ of Messrs. Dierdon and Buxton, the contractors for the Petersfield and Midhurst Railway, was brought up In custody charged with breach of contract in leaving his work on Monday. It appeared from the evidence of William Hewlett, the foreman of the works, and James Dierden a ganger, that the accused left the two horses which were in his charge when he went to his dinner at 12 o’clock, and instead of returning to his work, remained drinking at a public house all the afternoon. The case being clearly proved against him he was sentenced to pay a fine of 13s. 6d., including costs, or in default to undergo  fourteen days’ imprisonment with hard labour.
