The total expenditure under the Cattle Plague Act since the first appearance of the disease has been £1,600 5s. 6d. Your committee are glad to be able to inform the court that there has been no case of cattle plague in the county since April, 1866. They desire again to call the attention of the General Committee of the Cattle Plague to the great expense incurred in the inspection of cattle imported into the Isle of Wight, and would urge them to make some alteration in the present system by which such expense may be diminished. They would also suggest that with a view to economy it is very desirable to discontinue as far as practicable the power of the inspectors to grant licenses for the removal of cattle, and also to settle some scale of allowances to the Clerks of Divisional Committees for work done by them as clerks to their respective committees.

MELVILLE PORTAL, Chairman

This report passed without discussion, and the following orders were made:—

That Mr. George Taplin be appointed one of the members of the Cattle Plague Committee for the division of Kingsclere, in the room of Mr. Bradfield, resigned; and that Mr. W. Carter, the younger, of Petersfield, be appointed to receive the licenses and issue the market passes at Petersfield market, which has been licenses by the Lords of the Council.
That the report of the Finance Committee in regard to the cattle plague be referred to the General Committee of the Cattle Plague for their consideration.
