     RIFLE CONTEST.∏2ND ISLE OF WIGHT v. 12TH HANTS.—A rifle contest between ten members of each of the above corps (effectives of last year) took place at Butser Hill on Tuesday. The ranges were 200, 500, and 600 yards. Hythe position, targets, and scoring. No musketry instructor was allowed to fire, and no sighting shots to be taken. From the well-established reputation of both corps, considerable interest was manifested in the result of the contest, which proved to be in favour of the 12th Hants. This is a victory of which the Petersfield corps may justly feel proud, as the 2nd Isle of Wight, about three years since, offered a challenge to ‟any corps in England,‟ and this is the first time they have ever been beaten.
