PETERSFIELD.
ELECTION OF MAYOR.—On Monday last the annual general Court Leet and View of Frank Pledge was holden for the purpose of electing a mayor and the several officers for the borough for the ensuing year. The jury and officers having assembled at the Red Lion Hotel at one o’clock, proceeded, upon the arrival of the recorder, ― Williams, Esq., in accordance with ancient custom, headed by the mace-bearer, to the Town Hall, when, after the swearing in of the jury, and the usual preliminary matters having been gone through, Samuel William Seward, Esq., was proposed and re-elected (making his fourth year of service). The following officers were then chosen for the year ensuing, viz.:—William Carter, bailiff and crier; John Bailey, constable for the lower half-hundred of Finchdean; Walter Payne, and George Smart, tythingmen; Thomas Barnes and Charles Hoar, leathersellers; and Elijah Wakeford, beadle and hayward. The business being concluded the whole of the officers and jury, with the mayor and recorder, returned to the Lion Hotel, where, with some friends, they sat down to an excellent luncheon, prepared by Mr. Crafts. Upon the removal of the cloth the worthy Mayor proposed the usual loyal and other toasts in his well-known and happy style, and which was responded to in the same spirit till the hour of separation took place after a meeting of true enjoyment.
