PETERSFIELD

SAD ACCIDENT. —On Friday evening last a sad accident happened to John Head, son of Mr. Head, wheelwright of this town, under the following circumstances. It appeared that about dusk the unfortunate man had occasion to go into his father’s shop, in which is a deep pit used for the purpose of storing away potatoes, the trap door of which being on a level with the floor, had been removed. In passing along he stepped in, when, his side coming into violent contact with the frame work of the opening, he fell to the bottom with great force. The groans of the poor fellow soon reached the ears of the inmates of the house, when he was discovered and removed to his home, and R. S. Cross, Esq. surgeon, was in attendance, and seven ribs were found to have been fractured. We are sorry to add that he lies in a most precarious state.
