TEMPERANCE FETE.-The committee of the Portsmouth Ebenezer Temperance Society having solicited the use of the extensive and beautiful grounds connected with Leigh-park, near Havant, on Coronation-day, for a grand temperance fete, their request was most kindly and generously granted by the proprietor, W. H. Stone, Esq. About two o’clock the special train engaged by the committee for the purpose, conveying about 1,400 persons, including the band of the Royal Marine Artillery, left Portsmouth, and in about a quarter of an hour reached Havant, whence the people walked to the park. Besides those who went by the train many came from Portsmouth in their own conveyances, and many more arrived from Portchester, Cosham, Petersfield, Chichester, and the surrounding neighbourhood. Tea was provided in a booth erected for the purpose, and other refreshments were obtainable during the day. A short temperance meeting was held in the open air during the evening, and was addressed by Mr. F. Beck, Mr. W. Ranger, and Mr. H. Burden. At the close the assembly accorded a unanimous and hearty vote of thanks to W. H. Stone, Esq., for his generous grant of the park to the Temperance Society for the day. Three cheers for her Majesty the Queen, for W. H. Stone, Esq., for the Temperance Cause, and for the band brought the day’s programme to a close, without a trouble or mishap, and (on the testimony of Mr. Stone’s head gardener) without any damage or injury being done to a flower or shrub. It having been rumoured that the small charge made for admission to the park accrued to the proprietor, we have to state that this is quite incorrect. Mr. Stone placed the park for the day at the service of the Portsmouth Ebenezer Temperance Society, and whatever was realized on the occasion will be placed, after all the expenses are paid, to the funds of the society.
