THE SAVINGS’ BANKS OF HAMPSHIRE.—Pursuant to a motion made in the last session of Parliament by Viscount Cranbourne, a return has been issued from each savings' bank in England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland, containing the names of the officers, their respective salaries and allowances, if any; the amount of security each gives; the number of accounts remaining open; the total amount owing to depositors; the total amount invested with the Commissioners for the Reduction of the National Debt; the rate of interest paid to depositors on the various amounts of deposit; the average rate of interest on all accounts; the total amount of the separate surplus fund on the 20th of November, 1866, &c. From this return it appears that there are in Hampshire 13 savings' banks, namely, at Alresford, Alton, Basingstoke, Fareham, Gosport, Havant, Newport (Isle of Wight), Odiham, Petersfield, Portsmouth, Romsey, Southampton, and Winchester. These are conducted by 22 unpaid, and 34 paid officers, who have given security 12,320l. The expenses of the management of these 13 branches, inclusive of all payments and balances, for the year ending the 20th of November last, were 2081l.; the number of accounts then remaining open was 18,816l.; the total amount then owing to depositors was 518,921l.; and the total amount then invested with the Commissioners for the Reduction of the National Debt, excluding surplus fund of 7,981l., was 515,945l. The business of the Portsmouth branch is to be transferred to the Post-office Savings' Bank.
